Hispanic Church Studies Courses Offered in the

ETSS M.Div. Curriculum

The courses below are listed in the ETSS 2005-2006 Catalogue

REQUIRED COURSES

M1310 Mission in a Multicultural Context

First-year students will be immersed in an Hispanic setting in the southwestern United States for as much as three weeks as a way to think about the church in mission among people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. While students focus on the history, culture and contemporary realities of Hispanics, they also gain skills in intercultural dialogue and ministry that they can transpose to other cultural settings. The course follows a three-step process of See, Think and Act: "seeing" the Hispanic reality, "thinking" theologically and pastorally about that reality and "acting" pastorally and missionally as a response to having seen and thought about the Hispanic reality in the U. S. Southwest.

M1220 Missiology in a Multicultural Context

This course builds upon the January immersion course "Mission in a Multicultural Context." We reflect on the theological and missiological questions that arise from the experiences of students in a three-week immersion experience in an Hispanic setting. We explore the theological bases necessary to become a church in mission in intercultural settings, as well as paradigms for mission. Given the emphasis on cross-cultural mission for the course, we emphasize the themes of reconciliation and inclusion in the course. Additionally, we explore the question of inculturation - the sharing of the Gospel via the cultural symbols, rituals and expressions of particular groups and regions. Participation in the course "Mission in a Multicultural Context" is a prerequisite for this course.

ELECTIVE COURSES

M4102 Faith and Culture in the Spanish Missions

The Spanish missions in the U.S. Southwest represent a significant approach to evangelization and mission. We examine the ways that the Spanish missionaries sought to evangelize and Hispanicize the indigenous throughout the Southwest. We also examine the indigenous peoples' varied responses to the Spanish missionaries and the missions. Finally, we examine ways that the Spanish Christian faith melded with the mestizo culture on the Spanish frontier. A tour of the San Antonio Spanish missions is planned for the course.

M4205 Issues in Mission in a Hispanic Context

The purpose of this course is to introduce and expose the student to cultural issues in mission to the Hispanic community. We will deal with popular piety, culture, some language, community building, and immigration in order to enhance a deep engagement and understanding of the opportunities and barriers of culture and the pressures of the cross-cultural experience. By dealing with particularities of Hispanic Ministries, the students will be encouraged to think of a method for their use in beginning ministry in a multicultural setting. We will explore approaches to engagement in Hispanic mission, with analysis of the variety of ethnic and national identities, and tie such exploration to the analysis for mission in other cross cultural communities in the US.
