Hispanic Church Studies at ETSS
Hispanic Church Studies prepares graduates for ministry in our multicultural society with a focus on Hispanic contexts. First year students take a course titled "Mission in a Multicultural Context." This course involves a three-week immersion course in a Mexican-American setting in, followed by the spring semester portion of the course. This required course lays the foundation for the development of a pastoral and theological paradigm that takes into consideration the pluralistic nature of our society.
Students who want to develop specialized skills in Hispanic ministry can take elective courses in Hispanic Studies throughout their seminary program. Students are placed in a Hispanic or African-American setting for one of their field education courses. The seminary is a sponsoring institution of the Hispanic Summer Program. Hispanic students are encouraged to attend this two-week course of study in various theological disciplines. Non-Hispanic students who have demonstrated a commitment to Hispanic ministry are also eligible to attend. The seminary participates in an annual gathering of Hispanic Episcopal seminarians in the spring. Dr. Paul Barton administers The Panama Project, a three-week summer immersion program for ministry, on behalf of SCOM (Seminary Council on Mission).

Students involved in Hispanic Studies may take advantage of resources provided by nearby University of Texas at Austin. Students may attend public lectures and conferences offered regularly through the Center for Mexican American Studies and the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. The University of Texas maintains an internationally recognized library on Latin American, Mexican-American, and Southwestern subjects at the Nettie Lee Bensen Library Collection.
Students expecting to be in ministry in Hispanic settings and take advantage of the seminary's resources in Hispanic Studies are encouraged to arrive with an intermediate level of Spanish language proficiency. They are also encouraged to arrange for an independent language immersion course during a summer if extensive language acquisition is necessary. Spanish language courses are offered on campus at a regular basis by Dr. Horacio Peña. These courses are designed to help students function competently in liturgical and other pastoral settings.
The seminary benefits from its relationship with partner institutions. The office for the Center for Hispanic Ministry, Province VII is located on campus. Its director, the Reverend Jaime Case, is an adjunct faculty member. The Lutheran Theological Seminary in the Southwest offers courses for students interested in Hispanic and multicultural ministries. The ETSS curriculum allows for a limited registration in these courses. |
